I am a chronic pain patient with a very rare syndrome. This Bill will be a disaster if it passes, and it will literally lead to even more deaths by suicide and massive heart attacks and strokes because people can no longer live with their uncontrolled excruciating pain. People who were stable on their doses for years have already been forced off completely or had their pain meds drastically reduced and have had their quality of life destroyed. Pharmacies are refusing to fill legal prescriptions. Doctors are abandoning their patients. They are forcing rapid tapers even though the CDC strongly warned against this. Even though this Bill has a clause in it saying the use of opioids would still be up to the discretion of the doctor, we all know that is nonsense, because doctors have been bullied by the use of the PDMP, the FDA, and the DEA into not even treating their pain patients anymore. Doctor discretion no longer exists. You've taken that away from them and their patients. There is no such thing as individual care anymore. Stop lumping chronic pain patients who have been stable, taking legal prescriptions, and who take their meds properly, in with the real opioid crisis which is raging on the streets in the illegal fentanyl and heroin trade! As for "prescription drug overoses", there is only a tiny fraction of those who did not have additional substances in their bodies such as alcohol, meth, heroin, etc. Even after the CDC clarified their 2016 guidelines (3 years too late!) in April 2019, it has not had any real world effect at all. In fact, things continue to get worse for us. Those recommendations are still being treated like laws. The guidelines clearly state that chronic pain, cancer, palliative care (which does NOT only mean end of life care), sickle cell, and hospice patients are to be exempt. Yet we are the very people that these policies are destroying.
