With the Income Driven Repayment plans available in addition to the many other repayment plans federal student loans offer, refinancing is just delaying the inevitable. Federal student loans have many forgiveness options available today, whereas just 15 years ago they didn't exist. Unlike private student loans, federal student loans are not like mortgages and refinancing should not be added to the many options already on the table. Federal student loan servicers have the ability and should already be offering the options to their customers on how to best pay back their debt or explore loan forgiveness options. If they're not, then the lender or Federal Student Aid should be called upon to investigate.
