While transparency in our government is certainly an important thing, my concern here has to do with the fact that we have already seen that when certain people are found to have donated to causes or candidates that others disapprove of, there is undue retaliation. The "tolerant" folks on the Left have already been responsible for ousting Mozilla's CEO, for example, because he donated to California's Prop 8 several years before. Never mind the fact that, at the time, the proposition passed by more than a mere 51% majority via popular vote before being overturned by an activist judge who unilaterally decided that he, rather than the voters, got to determine policy. But that's the Left for you. They're always way smarter than you are and know more than you about how you should live your own life. Perhaps there could be a middle-ground on this...maybe the candidates have to disclose donation amounts categorically (e.g. private donations, corporate donations, union donations, etc.) without necessarily revealing the identities of those donors.
