We must grant citizenship to the 35,000 adoptees whose citizenship was not granted due to a loophole in the original legislation. These adoptees were adopted as children (not as adults as some are claiming). Currently, international adoptees are granted citizenship upon adoption. That was not always the case. It used to be that after adoption, adoptive parents had to apply for citizenship for their adopted children. However, this was not always adequately explained to the parents. As a result, the paperwork was frequently either not completed or completed incorrectly by the adoptive parents &/or the US adoption agencies. These are American children. It is appalling that they are being denied their citizenship.
