To anyone who thinks that American Indians have it so good, take a look at a rural reservation. Often it is nothing more than a rural ghetto that your average American would not want to live in. Indians have the highest poverty rate of any group in the US. As a group they have not recovered from the loss of their land, culture, livelihood, language, social relationships over the last five centuries. Sounds like time enough, right? - but the evidence is there that assimilation and disappearance of Native Americans has not happened. The federal government is obligated through treaties to continue to provide support. This bill is part of that obligation.
