Not everything needs to be changed to accommodate the NRA. I would consider this if it was a change only to the appeals process. However, I believe that healthcare providers, including the VA, should be able to send information about the mentally ill to the banned list. This would reduce the risk of a depressed person buying a firearm to commit suicide and could protect the general public from a mentally ill person who wants to harm others. If the veteran in question wants to appeal having their name on the banned list, they should have the option to appeal though the judicial system. This would make sure due process for a constitutional right is allowed for all veterans. This would also provide a natural cooling off process before the purchase of a gun.
