This country has a serious problem with differentiating paperwork immigration offenses and violent immigration offenses. Why does this country punish all immigrants, legally residing asylum seekers, nonviolent undocumented immigrants (paper work offenses), and violent immigration offenses with the exact same impunity? Jail and deportation. This is like punishing drivers with minor parking infractions the exact same way as drunk drivers who recklessly killed dozens of people. This kind of punishment is too costly. After factoring in the average GDP of 48,000/yr and the average cost of incarceration of a person per year, you’re essentially spending 100,000 per person per year. In the rare case the person (American or undocumented) committed a violent crime, then fine, the 100k is worth it. But if you really feel like giving hard-working nonviolent undocumented immigrants 100,000 USD per year of your hard earned money, I can think of hundreds of better uses for your money than incarceration/deportation. Fix the roads, give them healthcare, give them education, treat them to a free trip to Tahiti. Practically anything is more cost-effective than merely discarding non violent hard-working people into jail cells.
