I’m disappointed in the President. Now, I have not expected much from Donald J. Trump, but I am disappointed nonetheless. Congress has proven to America that bipartisan action is possible and that the way we do things does matter. However, Trump’s utilization of the National Emergencies Act (NEA) as a maneuver to circumvent the powers of Congress and the appropriations process is absolutely deplorable. And even though the White House claims that this will hold no future precedent for any presidents is simply a deluded state of mind that they have chosen to be in to justify the actions of this president. When in reality, this action taken by President Trump sets the precedent for future presidents, no matter the party, to utilize the NEA to advance their own political agenda. This is not about party, but instead the integrity of our political system. And I am afraid that this attempt to unilaterally reallocate billions of dollars has had an effect on the American people and any of those holding out hope that President Trump had even an ounce of respect for our political system. But the real question is what happens next? Will Republicans put their party above the American people or will they do what is best to defend the checks and balances of our system given through our Constitution? What happens next?
