I understand being opposed to abortion. But the current administrations cuts and changes are terrifying. To stop abortions, we have to thoughtfully examine the reasons that women have them.
Statistics have shown a significant reduction in violent crime rates since abortion was legalized. Why would that be? Because pregnant women made the choice not to raise a child in a bad environment. Unwanted children lead to desperate choices, and desperate choices more often lead to crime. Despite what you may hear in the media, our violent crime statistics have fallen steadily, and especially over the last decade (except for a minor uptick in 2015).
If you don't want women to be faced with the choice of aborting a baby
1) Don't cut funding to planned parenthood.
We live in a highly sexualized society (sex sells EVERYTHING) and then we tell our kids to deny their hormones and control themselves? It's a biological need. This has literally never worked throughout history. People are always going to have sex. Kids in religious schools still have sex and they still get pregnant. Don't kid yourself, educate your kids. If you don't, Planned Parenthood comes into public schools and performs this work -- but they can't without funding. Planned Parenthood also provides exams, in-clinic education, birth control and STD testing on a free or income-based rate structure. Want to know what happens when you cut this access to this kind of STD testing? In 2015, Scott County, Indiana had soaring numbers of HIV cases (from drug use) directly related to the closure of the only STD testing clinic in the county, a Planned Parenthood, by our Governor.
2) Don't cut ALL 25 Violence Against Women Act programs, working to prevent domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and more as the administration is working to do right now. Women facing these situations are more likely to consider abortion, and mothers and their babies born in these environments will not receive the care that they need to get out.
3) Don't cut access to healthcare. If you call yourself pro-life, then let's make sure those mothers and babies have access to affordable healthcare. I didn't say free, though my man Bernie would have helped us out there. But if not free, then affordable. The first thing we tell our moms is to take care of your baby, you have to take care of you. Moms take their babies to the doctor well before themselves but if they can't afford either, nobody wins and everyone loses.
4) Statistics have also proven that making abortion illegal does not reduce the occurrence of it. We'll see women injured or dying from back alley procedures because we didn't take care of the above.
Please consider the above. For those who consider themselves pro-life, I am glad you have come to the place that you are with the resources you need. But finger-pointing and putting pregnant women and unborn babies in a position to fail is hardly putting 'America First'.
