The atomic bombing of Japan was horrific and resulted in countless civilian deaths. Commemorating such a terrible event will make us seem callous and in complete disregard for the countless innocent lives lost. Further, arguing that we should recognize it because it saves "countless American lives" is so completely tone deaf that it's disgusting. If anything we should remember the bombings as a time to reflect on the brutality of war and the single most destructive act we ever perpetrated. Let's remember it to remind ourselves to never do it again.
