The science is in, people. Exxon knew about it in 1977 and admitted it until the late 1980s when they hired the shills who used to lie for the tobacco industry to convince Americans that there was doubt about the science. They don’t doubt it. They have been preparing for it since 1977. We are pumping CO2 into the atmosphere 10X faster than in the greatest extinction ever. We are on track for a 3.6 degree C. temperature rise by 2050 and 7.2 degrees by 2100. I don’t want my kids and grandkids to live on a barely habitable planet.
Google “the hidden costs of climate change”. E.g., “the Paris Agreement targets for emissions reductions will leave warming of 2.5 C to 3 C. Global warming of 2.5 C will cause a 15- to 25-per-cent reduction in per capita global economic output by the year 2100. If the increase is 4 C, the reduction is more than 30 per cent.” The cost of doing nothing is far higher. This ignores what it will be like to live in a world that’s 6.5 degrees F. hotter by 2050.
HR763 will cut our carbon emissions by at least 40% by 2030, and will incentivize similar cuts in all our trading partners, which is the entire world. It will return a dividend to all Americans with SSNs that will be greater than the extra cost for the lowest income 60% of us. It will create millions of new jobs in cleaner industries, while making the planet more livable. Few people will voluntarily decrease their carbon footprint. I prefer using capitalism and economics than to regulate us to death.
