I hear many fundamentalists make the assertion that abortions are murder because it conflicts with their religious doctrine. I agree with them that this is about the truth. The truth is that fetuses have not yet developed brains capable of more than heartbeat and other functions of the medulla until near birth. We justify killing mice in the attic more than fetuses. We justify killing sentient human beings in our penal system. Now why do we express outrage at the 'death' of a piece of tissue? The fact is, many people have been taught their whole lives that it is a moral crusade. This is the continuation of many who wish to remain a theocratic, patriarchal society. They want to restrict the rights and freedoms of others for their own beliefs. They don't have to have an abortion. Nobody said they have to get an abortion. But they should not be allowed to prevent anyone else from having an abortion. We live in a society founded on the separation of church and state, that we are entitled to our own rights so long as they don't infringe on the rights of others. To infringe on the rights of others is not acceptable in a democracy.
