A lot more can be done to help physicians prevent diabetes. For example, obesity medicine is a clinical area of expertise that is just being developed, obesity being a major cause for type 2 diabetes. While some may say that obese people just have to go on a diet, that is not so simple. Many neighborhoods don’t have a way to get fresh fruits and vegetables that are affordable. The food industry has created processed food alternatives that have fostered this obesity epidemic. We are learning that the adipose itself may be secreting substances that make weight loss difficult. Programs for weight loss take significant time and counseling. It will take at least another generation or two to adequately address these issues. Systematic programs designed by the federal government will be supportive and helpful in combatting this major health problem.
