It is clear that assault weapons have been used in the past in mass shootings (San Bernardino and Colorado, for example). The only reason a person would want this type of weapon is to increase the amount of damage it is capable of doing in the minimal amount of time. There is literally no industry (besides the military) in which this type of weapon is deemed necessary for individual ownership. The appropriate type of gun should be purchased, upon clearing a background check, for the sole purpose and use it is intended for (sportsmanship, personal safety) therefore eliminating the need for this type of gun. If there are special circumstances in which individuals want experience using this type of weapon, then the appropriate channels to regulate such use can be put in place. But that should be the only way in which it is accessible to individuals.
