The Electoral College was created for two primary reasons. The first was to put a buffer between the population and the election of the President so a tyrant could not succeed at manipulating the voting public. The second was a compromise with the small states to ensure the medium and large states did not dominate. The structure gives much more power to voters in the small states. State laws requiring electors to vote with the majority vote of their state also defeats the the first function of the Electoral College as it enables the manipulation of the voting public, further enhancing the power of the small states over the medium and large states. As example look to the Bush-Gore election and to the 2016 election. We call ourselves a Republic but our Representatives and Senators have diminished that by giving increasing amounts of power to the office of the President, and by becoming more tribal in their politics. It is time to move toward a true democracy by abolishing the Electoral College.
