If a police officer is on furlough, they are not working, therefore they should turn in their weapon. While I understand the concern is for the safety aspect of the officer, if not working, they are a citizen like everyone else. In the case of their personal owned gun, they should abide with the carrying law for guns. In terms of a government shut-down, this should be prohibited. This shows one's inability and/or refusal to do their job and if allowed, there should be consequences, i.e., no pay during shutdown and an additional financial penalty.
