To get my Illinois ID I had to visit my local DMV six times! The first time I was sent away because my bank statement included a credit card on it. Had to go to the bank and get a signed and stamped statement with only my checking account in it. Since I live with family and am not the primary name holder on accounts I had to pay for an official transcript with my address on it. Even though the law says this should be enough, it wasn't. I also ended up having to purchase homeowners insurance (for a home I don't own!) to prove that I lived in Illinois. By the time I had all my "correct" documents, it was 5 days until the deadline to register to vote. Guess what? My DMV decided to take a FIVE day holiday. I ended up having to drive an hour away to get my new license and register to vote on the deadline, even though I started the process well in advance. Thankfully, I have a highly flexible work schedule and massive determination, otherwise I think the state would have stolen my right to vote.
