The AMA, Family Physicians and other groups of medical professionals have recently spoken out against government interference in doctor/patient care. This is more of the same misguided policy that has led to a crisis in pain care for thousands of chronically ill people, leaving formerly employed, functional people bedridden, unable to work, parent, etc. It is abusive and a human rights violation. It has also not decreased overdose deaths, which are largely driven by illegally obtained drugs. Many many diseases other than cancer (including my own, the genetic disease Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome) cause severe, unending pain. Opioids are only one element of symptom management, but until further better medications are available, continue to be a key one.
