People are saying no for reasons like we can use that money to feed the poor. That would be fine if it was true that that is where the requested $2,000,000 is actually going, but we all know it is not. Jazz is considered to be the truest, original musical art form to come out of the U.S. and it is essential to our cultural and social history. Without jazz there would be no rhythm and blues, nor rock and roll, nor hip hop. And the roots of jazz is more reflective of the idea of the US as melting pot than any other genre, across actors. Jazz IS America! Finally, the money is being requested by the Smithsonian and a part of the museums' mission is to preserve our cultural heritage, lest it disappears. And considering I know a lot of college students that don't know Billie Holiday is a woman, or how Miles Davis changed music at least four times, or who Marcus Miller, John Coltrane, Nina Simone, or Dave Brubeck are is proof positive that this magnificent American art form needs preservation.
