This resolution would condemn in the strongest possible terms the terrorist attacks in Brussels on March 22, 2016. The attacks were carried out at Brussels Airport and a transit station and killed at least 31 victims while injuring over 250 others. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which followed the arrest in Brussels four days earlier of a suspect in the November 2015 Paris attacks.

There are several Americans among the victims, including at least eight whose injuries have been reported. The State Department has so far avoided releasing a specific number as they are searching for a “fair number of Americans.”

The resolution goes on to express the deepest sympathies of the House of Representatives for the victims of the attack and those close to them. It also offers to support the Belgian government in its efforts to bring those who carried out the attacks to justice while responding to the threat of ISIL and its affiliates. Further, the resolution declares that ISIL “poses a fundamental threat to the universal value of freedom in all countries.\"
