It's all very well and good to say that the mother should not have been taking drugs while she was pregnant. In a perfect world, no child would ever be born addicted to drugs. But to refuse healthcare to either the baby or the family is morally repugnant and useless to the point of cruelty. It will not solve the problem of drug addiction. It will not create a healthy populace that can contribute to society and perhaps ultimately take care of itself. All that it will do is drive people further into poverty, and fray an already threadbare safety net, putting greater pressure on all of society. All it will do is create yet another generation of unhealthy and poverty-stricken people. Putting more money into programs to fight drug addiction, job training programs, and education might be a better solution to this problem than taking away people's health care to punish them for choices that we disagree with.
