Americans pay more and get less for healthcare than anybody else in the developed world. We already pay for other people's care, whether it's through higher insurance premiums, hospitals charging us extra to cover the cost of providing uncompensated care to others, or through higher taxes to cover Medicare and Medicaid. Why not get a better deal for our money? The current insurance system wastes time and money on paperwork and its incentives are perverse: the people who can easily get coverage are healthy and need it least, the people who need it most are sick and can't afford it. And expecting employers to provide health insurance makes American workers uncompetitive compared to workers abroad. Why Republicans, who claim to hate wasteful spending and who promote American companies, would prefer a system that wastes money and makes American companies less competitive is a mystery to me.
