Our country fought a Civil War over this issue. The Union won. The Confederates surrendered. The Emancipation Proclamation declared slavery illegal. The Gettysburg Address honored the men who fought and died in this epic time for this righteous cause and to reunite the Union under one rule of law. The problem is you can’t take the racism out of the racist, and those who still believed in white supremacy were allowed to put their racism in action into the public square. We have come a long way as a nation in the 155 years since the end of the Civil War, but the job is not finished. In honor of Rep. John Lewis, let us finish the job so he may Rest In Peace.
