Absolutely not. The electoral college is an essential safeguard against the disproportionate influence of the majority (i.e. majority rule). Our government was wisely established with a complex structure to ensure certain safeguards like these as well as checks and balances to also ensure the separation of powers. We need to protect ourselves from our worst instincts—not make is easier to succumb to them—by shoring up these basic elements of the government’s structure. Would this be more convenient? For some, yes, but what will it mean for others? If you think we’re divided now, let majority rule take hold and watch the crevasse grow. Dismantling the Electoral College will be the beginning of our end.
