The science on this is clear (science is historical record) many workers will loose their jobs and many full time workers will be changed to part time. The businesses pass the additional costs on to the consumer (Economics 101 or basic economics). It is a type of tax. All businesses will raise their prices. Small local businesses will loose their market share (can't keep the cost down compared to national or international businesses) and will go out of business. The very short term (a couple of months) increase in spending power is taken away when costs go up. Many national or international companies will increase their prices before the time for the increase in pay (see McDonald's). If a minimum wage increase is passed watch the cost of your food at your favorite fast food restaurant. It will increase. Many will point out its only a few cents per item or less than ten cents per item but a few cents here and a few cents there and you bill is now close to a increase of a dollar for a family. Ones overall bills will increase $10 -$20 a week and $100s of dollars a year. After the local businesses go out of business and the national and international companies have less competition then there will be further price increases. A student of mine asked me the question then "how do you increase wages?" The answer is to have a strong economy so an employer gives raises so his or her employees don't get hired away by other companies (the competition). This also gives people an incentive to work harder and, the smart ones, will continue to "shop" around for better wages and use that as leverage to get an increase in pay. The best workers should be given the best pay. Remember in school - A, B, C, D, F? My experience is students that get As and Bs are ones who work harder not smarter. Some of my smartest students would get Cs because they were not willing to work for the higher grade. Politicians will use this to try to convince people they are for the people but behind close doors they are laughing at us. Please do the research if you don't believe me.
