Developing an exascale system is simply the next step in improving the US's efficiency in terms of research, data collection, cyber defense technologies, communication, and so forth. The ability for a computer to process information at a thousand times the speed at which they do now would be extremely beneficial for our national interests. Also, the cost out of the individual tax payer's pocket would be minimal. With a projected cost of $105 million over the next few years or so, no significant monetary imbalance would be felt by us citizens. The importance of a computer like this is greatly under appreciated.
