This bill — the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights Act — would include domestic workers in common workplace rights and protections such as paid overtime, safe and healthy working conditions and freedom from workplace harassment and discrimination. It would also create new rights and protections that address domestic work’s unique challenges.

The common workplace rights and protections this bill would include domestic workers in are:

Overtime pay;
Paid sick days;
Civil protection from workplace harassment and discrimination;
Provision of clear health and safety information, including providing health education grants for domestic workers to community-based organizations;
Meal and rest breaks;
Protection for live-in workers; and
Privacy.

The domestic work-specific rights this bill would create include:

Written contracts;
Affordable healthcare;
Retirement benefits;
Fair scheduling;
Support for survivors of sexual harassment; and
Grants for workforce training.

This bill would also create “know-your-rights” information, mechanisms to prevent employer retaliation against workers who report abuse, a confidential hotline and emergency access tool to address harassment, affordability for Medicaid consumers and a worker and employer-led federal taskforce.
