Many non-violent drug convictions are for merely possessing controlled substances. A great deal of these possession arrests are for cannabis or "marijuana", as it remains highly illegal in many states. Why should a person serve years for possessing a plant in, say, Idaho, while that same person could legally possess the same substance in a place like Washington or California? Additionally, hard drugs, which are illegal in all states (such as meth, cocaine, etc.) have high rates of addiction. Addiction is a public health issue which must be addressed in a medical context, not in an incarceration setting. A no vote on this is a rejection of science, medicine, and basic human empathy.
