D.C. has a split personality when it comes to food. On one hand representatives want their districts to do well; which usually means deregulating whatever corporations are in their districts. On the other hand, the government has taken on the role of telling us what is good for us to eat. There is a clear conflict of interest here. This is most prominently seen in the corn business. Corn is refined and used to make high fructose corn syrup, which is used in everything. Even with more and more studies showing that added sugars are responsible for the obesity epidemic the representatives of corn producing states don't want further regulation on sugar because it is their biggest cash crop (pun intended). Change is never easy, but if we get away from this low fat fad and quit adding sugar to EVERYTHING; we will be a lot healthier as a population. Take a look at a food label; you will be surprised at how much sugar is in things that shouldn't have sugar in them, and you will not see a daily percentage value... think on that.
