Hate crimes are when someone in a position of power intentionally harms a marginalized person. Police are nota marginalized community. You choose whether or not to be a cop, and cops have power over the general public, so any assault on a police officer could not possibly be a hate crime. This is insulting to oppressed folks who have been victims of hate crimes: lesbians subjected to corrective rape, ripping off a Muslim woman's hijab, the sheer amount of violence against trans folks. At the end of the day, a cop can take of his uniform that acts like a layer of protection. Marginalized folks cannot take off their identity so as to be safe in public, and should not have to as we have freedom of expression.
