The reason the government shut down is because Trump went back on his word. After the Senate had already passed a budget UNANIMOUSLY that Trump said he’d sign, and was headed home for the holidays, Trump suddenly decided he’d changed his mind.
The “crisis” at the border is an utter fiction. There’s no crisis at the border except the ugly humanitarian one being visited upon weak and defenseless children by ICE and the Border Patrol, ripping children from their mothers’ arms like the Gestapo, and then losing track of where they put them.
If the border was such an emergency, why did Trump wait two years to suddenly demand his wall after Congress had passed a budget and gone home for the holidays? His own party controlled both houses of Congress for his first two years in office. No wall, no temper tantrums. The moment the Democrats took control of the House, suddenly there was an emergency at the border.
Trump is the only one in government who thinks the border wall is a good idea. He couldn’t get his way through the normal political process, so now he’s taking the country by the throat and demanding it? That’s not how democracy works. That is what is called “tyranny.”
Trump is embarrassed because he failed to fulfill his campaign pledge to get Mexico to pay for a wall on the border, which was a ludicrous delusion to begin with. Now he wants American taxpayers to pay for it. That was never part of his campaign, American voters never voted to pay for it, and taxpayers never agreed to pay for it. Now he's DEMANDING that American taxpayers pay for it, and he's holding the country hostage until he gets it. That's behavior befitting a 2-year old or a tyrant. But it's not how democracy works.
