People with mental disorders should not have access to owning firearms. In my opinion someone's rights, even those given by the second amendment, should be limited when they restrict the rights of others. Allowing a mentally ill person to own a firearm risks the ability of themselves and others to enjoy their rights to life. I do not think the qualifications for a mental disorder in this case are too broad. If a person is unable to function individually because of their mental health they are not well enough to own a firearm safely. The safety of our citizens should be put first. It is not safe to allow someone with depression, who might harm themselves, or someone with bipolar disorder who experiences mania, or someone with schizophrenia who may have threatening hallucinations, to own a firearm, a weapon that puts them, their care giver, and others at risk.
