The government should plan for and subsidize the future we want to have, not a model that's proven it doesn't work in the long term. We can have a healthier, more sustainable, and responsible future and the government should actively pursue it. Otherwise we get a self-fulfilling prophecy and more of the same problems that we're trying to solve. It's the same with highway spending and sprawl development -governments artificially subsidize a really unsustainable model, try to build their way out, make it worse, and justify it all with traffic and population projection models that are based on the same assumptions that have gotten us in this mess in the first place - instead of planning for and incentivizing the direction we need to go. But yeah, there are massive industries surrounding both these things, and it's gonna be painful for sure, but it's gotta happen and the government can help things move incrementally in the right direction by providing incentives for the kinds of things that create a healthy, resilient and responsible future.
