I was at a high school today during a lock down drill. In those ten minutes of silence, I imagined how it would be playing out if it wasn't a drill. I took time to reflect on whether I would feel safer if I was carrying a weapon, if the teacher I was with was carrying a weapon, and/or if students had a weapon. On the surface, sure. I'd love to play the hero and stop a shooter myself. But, what if I missed? What if a teacher or student tried to take matters into their own hands and killed people by mistake? What if the shooter tried to take a hostage? In every scenario that played out in my mind, more people died the more guns were added to the mix. I see no good whatsoever coming from 18-year-olds owning handguns. Our society does not need more guns.
