S. 1631 is ridiculous!
It's ham handed approach to victimless crime couched in lame 9/11 rhetoric. The bill is likely to be counter productive. It seems more intended to put Federal Dollars into another set of private detention centers or to expand current ones, probably both.
While there is something to be said for enforcing the time limits of Visas, the bill is far from even an attempt at a measured response.
There're a sets of mitigating factors that need to be accounted for. Transportation problems, illness, family members health issues to name a few.
There's no problem with there bring fines; however, $500 a day is too harsh. While a wealthy individual can easily pay $10,000 a day; people of modest means will have problems figuring out how to pay even $100 a day.
But what if they can’t? The bill seems to intentionally create an endless circle.
Imprisonment is out of the question. Besides this approach will cost the country money, and it doesn't get the violaters out of the country any sooner.
Compelled violators to leave the country is the appropriate action unless there is in fact an asylum case. Then what if the Visa Violater has insufficient funds for tickets not just the fine?
Again this looks more like an attempt to put more Federal Dollars into privatized detention centers.
The bill will create a bigger mess than the problem it purports to solve: A hallmark of the current administration.
