Yes, children (regardless of documentation or immigration status) should be kept with their parents or guardians. Families belong together! I’m so very very very angry that this even needs to be said. This bill says that it will “ensure that unauthorized immigrant children aren’t cruelly separated from their parents while they await an immigration hearing”; however, I don’t see that this helps to get families out of detention centers by ensuring that they have a speedy hearing. We NEED to focus our energy on pushing for a compassionate immigration policy. We need to close ALL detention centers and abolish ICE. We need to reunite families and provide care for the trauma that was created by separation. We need to support sanctuary cities. We need to support our immigrants by providing a raise in immigration visas that are consistent with labor demands and promote family reunification and a clear path to citizenship and voting rights. We need to provide healthcare, protection from being exploited at work, and protection from losing their housing. We also need to make sure that they are properly represented in court, their cases move through quickly, and they are seen in immigration courts - not criminal. We should embrace and expand the DREAM Act and pass a clean DACA bill. We should also work to create a strong relationship with Mexico, Central American countries, and South American countries and provide aid. We should implement ALL of this because it is the right thing to do and at the end of the day we are all human beings - no one is illegal.
