“The United Nations was not created in order to bring us to heaven, but in order to save us from hell.”
The United Nations is a flawed but critically important institution. It provides a forum in which world leaders can come together and solve disputes diplomatically, without escalating to violent conflict and needless human deaths. It gives us evidence-based health, human rights, and environmental standards that are not dictated by any one country’s national interests.
The UN charter was signed in San Francisco in 1945 because the world never wanted to experience the horrors of a world war again. American participation in the United Nations is critical to its future success and legitimacy. We need to improve our international organizations, not withdraw from them.
