The Affordable Care Act has improved the lives of millions – removing lifetime caps, expanding access to Medicaid, lowering costs, protecting people with pre-existing conditions and making sure millions of people have access to affordable healthcare.
Trumpcare and the GOP's plans for 'repeal' of the ACA would result in the loss of health care for an estimated 22 million in order to give a huge tax cut to the wealthy and to insurance companies. The proposed legislation does absolutely nothing to improve healthcare for the people of this country.
Instead of going down the 'repeal and replace' path, Democrats and Republicans must put partisan politics aside and work together to improve upon the ACA. The individual mandate must be retained in order to ensure there are enough insured healthy individuals to keep overall expenditures lower than premium costs. Shifting the cost of healthcare to those who need it most and can least afford it is not a solution to the problem.
In addition to making quality healthcare affordable to everyone, healthcare legislation must include actions aimed at reducing and standardizing the costs of medical services and prescription drugs, costs which are out of control in the United States.
