The more we do to help those with mental illness, the less we will see mentally ill people in prison. The more action we can take to help those with mental illness, the more we help society as a whole. I believe that early diagnosis and sustained care and treatment can help prevent violent episodes, and can help to develop people who might have otherwise been dependent lead productive lives that contribute to the rest of society. While treatment and therapy aren't always effective, the people we can help lead to a more fulfilling and positive life will greatly outweigh the ones we are not able to successfully manage their illness. There is no such thing as a wasted resource or endeavor in this area, as the effort to improve the way we treat and manage mental illness in the country is an incredibly important component of being a progressive, modern nation.
