Addiction is a disease not a crime. Treatment is paramount not criminalization. We have far too many people of color, poor people and the disadvantaged locked up. Now that it’s seeped into the middle class and rich white neighborhoods we are suddenly much more focused as a nation. So let’s use that awareness to our advantage. Early intervention and education are the cures.Let’s give people a fighting chance and hope of a better life instead of continuing the cycle of addiction and prison. I’m speaking from the experience of a mother who watched my brilliant son spend time in jail for his addiction. He was one of the lucky ones who has succeeded through treatment and strong family support. But it woke this middle class white family up to a disease that’s destroying families regardless of the race, religion, social standing, income. This is no longer a “those people” problem. It’s everyone’s problem and we must do better than throwing sick people into jail for their disease.
