While I am a fan of Kate's Law, and I think prison time can be a deterrent to entering the country illegally, I don't think it's a very big deterrent for most. Furthermore, why should we tax payers have to pay for feeding & housing illegal immigrants in the prison system? I say for first time & multiple time offenders, deport them back as soon as possible. If they have broken other laws while in our country, particularly drug & violent offenses, they should serve a SUBSTANTIAL prison term to offer a greater deterrent, then be deported. Keep in mind that these are not US citizens, & do not have the same rights afforded to us.
