It is important to recognize the very real lasting effects and setbacks that 400 years of slavery caused an entire race of people. These are not "handouts." For every similar event in history, reparations have been paid and there is no reason why slavery, which was larger and more devastating than all of those events, should be treated any differently. A study would also reveal the best way to offer reparations to African Americans; it does not necessarily need to be in the form of monetary payments. But we should at least be open to a study of this.
