My feeling is that a border wall will do very little to stem the tide of narcotics coming into the US from South America. People are people and money talks - and there is a significant amount of money to be made in the illegal narcotics trade. How long will it take to establish agreements between the cartels and border guards? A wall will make things more difficult for refugees to flee into the US, but if we think it will stem the drug trade, we’re fooling ourselves. They’ll find a way in.
We should consider the root causes of drug use and addiction. We should address healthcare and poverty. We should address mental illness and the perception of mental illness in this country. We should address the challenges and adversity minority citizens face, particularly those with dark skin. We should address the ludicrous cost of education. These are all things we can do at home, and there are plenty more, and plenty more things we can do to help the people in South America.
Treat the problem, not the symptom.
