Doctors in Venezuela report most hospitals lack basic medical supplies to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak — including soap and running water. That’s because the crisis in Venezuela was dire before this pandemic ever began.
Venezuelans already faced extreme medical supply shortages and a collapsed healthcare infrastructure. Devastating U.S. sanctions had helped collapse the Venezuelan economy. There have been food and fuel shortages. Venezuelans already faced mass state violence, torture, and other human rights abuses from their government, and threats of bombing, regime change, and war from our government.
So the very notion of deporting Venezuelan families in the United States back to this nightmare — especially elders and people with existing health issues — is UNCONSCIONABLE.
TPS would be a life-line for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans. It would help protect Venezuelans seeking safety in the U.S. from arrest, detention, deportation, unemployment, family separation, starvation, and the risk of death.
