OK, I like the flag as much as the next guy, but desecrating the flag is free speech. As US citizens, we should be mature enough to handle it when someone we disagree with enacts her or his right to free speech. Do I have to like it? No. But I don't like many things in our society, but I don't get to make them unconstitutional either. If anything, people should be worried about corporations who sell us stuff by wrapping it in the flag. Is buying a new truck this 4th of July patriotic, no. But if you watch all of the ads on TV you'd begin to think it was your patriotic duty. Furthermore, before we worry about desecrating the flag, maybe we should worry about how we merchandise the flag. And where does desecration begin and end? Frankly, I find American flag bikinis, boxers, thongs, toilet paper, plates, dog harnesses, and so many other products way more outlandish than I do a political statement. So, should we honor our flag, yes. Should we amend the constitution to protect it from desecration, no.
