I think a bigger issue is just how much power a President or a Congress should have without advise and consent. A lot of anger against not only Trump but also Obama, Bush, Clinton, Nixon, etc. comes from abuse of power for political or other reasons. Although gridlock is the expected result under normal conditions, there has got to be a means of controlling an administration that has gone off the rails, had assumed dictatorial powers, or has lost support of a majority of the country. It shouldn’t be up to a party. Parliamentary democracies can do this by a vote of no confidence and send a vote to the “country.” Maybe we should do the same. Governments would not have a full four years to advance their mischief if they were this accountable. Just a thought.
