So much of the wording of these bills is an attempt to disguise what's really going on. Mental health is a delicate issue. It is between the patient, caregiver, the doctors, and counselors. If only we screened for "Mental defects" for gun ownership as rigorously as we are proposing to screen for needed aid we would probably have few guns in the hands of those who shouldn't have them. In these times we need to proceed with caution we need to look to our history books and make sure we are not repeating atrocities of the past. It's very easy for the term mental deficiencies to be painted on people who simply disagree. As late as the mid-20th-century husband have been using the term "mental deficiencies", "nervousness","delicate" and other words to have their wives committed in order to have control. It is not just government that uses a wide paintbrush for it's own purposes. Who will be the judge of competency? A governing body? A doctor? The police? A group of your peers? Aren't these the very people most in need? We skate today on very thin ice.
