I was born before the U.S. got into WWII. I have seen this same set of arguments used over biracial marriage. Several states refused to recognize these marriages when done in other states. The same sort of thing happened with age of consent. Couples who were legally married in one state did not have their marriage recognized in other states. In extreme cases, men who married a woman in a state with a low age of consent were arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a minor in another state with a higher age of consent. This is why the resolution of same sex marriage must be resolved at the level of SCOTUS.
