I am a primary health care provider. I have never had an abortion nor do I ever plan to have an abortion. However I have friends, family members and patients who this was the choice that they made after very careful consideration for various reasons and I support them. This is a decision that no woman takes lightly. This is a decision that should be between a woman and her healthcare provider, not a politician who knows nothing about their individual case. A woman may not be ready to be a parent and unfortunately people make mistakes, they are human. There are many young girls (ages 10-19) who haven't benefited from parents that support them and teach them to respect their own bodies and how to get birth control, and wind up pregnant before they are ready to be a good parent that can support a child emotionally, financially and physically. You may say adoption is always an option but we have over 300,000 children already in foster care in the US waiting to be adopted currently with abortion currently legal. If abortion was illegal these numbers would skyrocket. I care about the unborn, but even more so for the living. The quality of life of a child is very dependent upon the maturity and readiness of the mother caring for them. If a woman who has an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy cannot obtain a safe and legal abortion and is forced to carry out the pregnancy, I fear for the child who would grow up in a home unwanted, or uncared for, abused, neglected, a life of misery. There are other women who have abortions because they are not financially capable of raising a child. There are women who have abortions because they were raped. There are girls who have abortions at the age of 12 and 13 because their father or uncle or grandfather raped them. There are women who have abortions after 20 weeks because they are told that their fetus has a fatal congenital malformation and they choose not to put that baby through birth only to face a short, miserable life with breathing tubes, feeding tubes, central lines, poking and prodding and a life of misery for a month until they pass away. There are women who choose to abort to save their own life due to health issues. There are so many different reasons that a woman would make this choice and we have to respect a woman to make the choice that is right for her. Women are capable of making this choice. A politician doesn't have the right to decide what is right for an individual woman and her body. Again if you don't believe in abortion, don't have one. One of the most moving images I saw at the march was an older gentleman in his 70s with a sign that had a hanger taped to it and it said "Never Again". He was referring to the many women who lost their lives seeking illegal abortions prior to Roe v. Wade.
