We need to do away with mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines and three strikes laws, especially when it comes to non-violent victimless crimes. The sentencing laws have little to no deterrent effect at all. As a country the U.S has approximately 5% of the worlds population and 25% of the worlds prisoners, and we spend more than $80billion each year on prisons. The major culprit is the war on drugs. Not only has it lead to mass incarceration but studies show no positive correlation between harsher sentencing laws and decreased crime rates especially narcotics related crime. The current system will remain corrupt as long as corrections is privately owned and operated. If your answer to a obviously broken system is to build more prisons and you believe the incapacitation philosophy of criminal justice is effective, than you my friend need to open your eyes because your missing the bigger picture.
